Thief uses hammer to smash Saks Fifth Avenue jewelry case at Somerset Collection

TROY, Mich. – What shoppers initially thought was gunfire Friday at the Saks Fifth Avenue store at the Somerset Collection mall in Troy was actually the sound of a jewelry case being smashed by a thief with a large hammer.

Troy police are looking for the person who smashed the glass case and grabbed the jewelry while the mall was still full of shoppers.

The store carries high-end, ultra expensive Cartier watches, some for up to $10,000.

Kasia Rymar was inside Somerset doing some Father's Day shopping when she saw all the commotion.

"Somebody having a sledge hammer -- that's unsafe," Rymar said.

Police said there may have been more than one person involved in the robbery and that they fled the mall in a gray Ford Taurus. However, there's been no description of a thief nor warning from police that there is a robber on the run.

"That's scary, there's no police looking for someone," Rymar said.

Anyone with information on this robbery is asked to contact Troy police.
