DETROIT – The decomposing body of a toddler-aged boy was found Wednesday in a Detroit apartment after a maintenance worker went in because of a strong odor.
First Assistant Chief Lashinda Stair said the boy appears to be 2 of 3 years old.
The worker was in a hallway of the Madison Estates apartments on Trumbull Avenue in the Woodbridge neighborhood when he smelled the odor.
Stair said the worker traced it to an apartment, went in, and found the boy in a bedroom.
“The maintenance man was actually servicing an apartment across the hall, and then certainly the odor caused him to check and unfortunately he discovered the child at that time and called 911,” Stair said.
Police said the boy may have been dead for more than a week. His death is being investigated as a homicide.
Where's the victim's mother?
Police said the child’s mother was taken from the apartment by ambulance more than a week ago. She was released from the hospital Tuesday.
However, police later found her at a local hospital's psychiatric ward.
