Troy apartment fire displaces residents

TROY, Mich. – Eight apartments were evacuated early Thursday morning after a kitchen fire spread into a two-alarm blaze at the building in the 1500 block of Kirts Boulevard near Crooks Road in Troy.

Two of the units were completely destroyed. The other six sustained smoke damage.

The fire started in the kitchen of a bottom floor unit and spread upstairs. The occupant was alerted to the fire by her smoke detector. She left the unit and notified her neighbor who then called 911 to report the fire.

Everyone escaped safely. According to the Troy Fire Department, an elderly adult female resident was evaluated by EMS and transported to Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, for further evaluation. One firefighter later sought medical treatment for second degree burns to his ears.

One cat died in the fire apartment and two other cats remain unaccounted for.

The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire.
