Troy police arrest suspect breaking into bank

Zubeck couldn't get inside vault

TROY, Mich. – Michael Zubeck, 22, from Troy, was arrested Friday when police caught him attempting to rob the 5/3rd Bank at 3754 Rochester Road in Troy.

Police were called to the bank at 2:16 a.m. on an alarm and found pry marks on the entrance door and the ATM lock plate laying on the ground. Officers knew the ATM had been vandalized the previous evening.

The bank's security told the police that they could remotely see a person inside the bank wearing all black and carrying a backpack. Security then saw the person trying to break into the vault inside the bank.

Police set up a perimeter around the bank and waited for Zubeck to leave. When he did, he was taken into custody without incident.

Zubeck was wearing a black knit hood, black gloves and a nylon stocking covered his face. He also had a hammer, wedge and flashlight with him.

The 22-year-old had allegedly damaged the interior of the bank stock room door, but was unable to get inside a vault or steal any cash.

Zubeck admitted to attempting to break into the ATM the previous evening.

Zubeck was arraigned Friday on the following charges:

• Breaking into Safe; Felony punishable up to life.
• Breaking and Entering with intent to commit Larceny; Felony punishable up to 10 years.
• Breaking and Entering with intent to break into Safe; Felony punishable up to life.
• Malicious Destruction of Building - $20,000 or more in damage; Felony punishable up to 10 years.

Bond was set at $50,000 and his next court date is Tuesday.
