Troy police create 'safe zone' for Craigslist transactions

Anyone selling, buying off Craigslist can arrange to do business in front of police station

TROY, Mich. – The Troy Police Department is looking to curb crimes connected to Craigslist by offering the front parking lot of the police station as a "safe zone" for transactions.

"The Troy Police Department is aware that individuals hoping to perpetrate a crime frequently seek out victims online," Chief Gary Mayer said. "Our mission is to keep our residents safe and reduce their chances of victimization with this initiative."

Police warn that Craigslist transactions should be conducted during the day and in public areas.

The parking lot of the Troy Police Department is under recorded surveillance.

"The bottom line is that you don't know who you are doing business with and extra safety precautions should be taken," Mayer said.

The Troy Police Department is located at 500 W. Big Beaver Rd., Troy, MI 48220.
