Two men killed in 3-car crash in Canton Township

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Two men died Sunday night after being hit by what witnesses described as a 2013-16 dark blue or black Dodge Caravan or similar vehicle.

The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. as the victims were crossing Michigan Avenue near I-275. The driver left the scene without stopping, police said.

The first victim, a 54-year-old Westland man, was then hit by a woman driving a Buick LaCrosse. That driver stayed at the scene. The victim was killed instantly Canton police reported.

The second victim, a 45-year-old Inkster man, was critically injured by the driver of a Ford Expedition who also stayed at the scene. He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Livonia where he died.

No injuries were reported by the drivers or passengers of the vehicles which stopped. Alcohol, speed and distracted driving do not appear to be factors involving the two drivers who remained at the scene.

Witnesses say the crash was terrifying and happened within seconds.

Police said that the driver of the Dodge Caravan is a Middle Eastern male, approximately 36 to 40 years old, clean-shaven with short black hair. He was wearing a dark, possibly black suit with a red tie.

Anyone with any information about the driver or the owner of the vehicle, or witnessed the crash, is asked to call the Canton Township Police Department at 734 394-5400.

The crash remains under investigation.
