DETROIT - A United States Marine from Metro Detroit disappeared last month, and his family is desperate to find any sign of him.
Marines have a reputation for being able to handle themselves in difficult situations, but one Marine's family is very worried about his well-being after he was reported missing last week.
"It's very, very difficult," said Dayna Phillips, Calhoun's sister.
Douglas Calhoun failed to show up for either of his two jobs after he went missing May 31. Calhoun went out with his friends and returned home to the 3000 block of W. Outer Drive.
When he pulled up in the early morning hours of June 1, he called a friend.
"He was just letting his friend know that he had gotten home," Phillips said. "They had been out partying, celebrating with some other friends, and just letting his good friend know that, 'I'm home. I'm going in the house, and I'll talk to you later on.'"
That was the last time anyone has heard from him.
Friends and family in the community will come together for a neighborhood walk on Monday, June 19, to pas out flyers and check vacant areas. It will begin at 6 p.m. on Fenkell and Evergreen.
"Chef Doug" is how friends and customers know the personal chef and caterer. He didn't show up for a job Friday and didn't make a flight to a big event in St. Louis over the weekend.
"What I'm feeling, I can't describe it," said Eric Phillips, Calhoun's brother-in-law.
Calhoun is 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs 230 pounds. Eric Phillips said if there was trouble Calhoun would have been able to handle himself. He said it's the unknowns of the situation that makes it hard for Calhoun's family to cope with his disappearance.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for information in the case.
"Regardless of the money, if you know something somebody should say something and bring this man home to his family," Dayna Phillips said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or Detroit police at 313-596-1240 or 313-596-1616.
Dayna Phillips said she is willing to accept calls if it leads to finding her brother. Her number is 313-213-6583.
