Van hits teens in Detroit; 1 killed, 1 hospitalized

14-year-old girl killed; 15-year-old girl hospitalized in critical condition

DETROITA 14-year-old girl was killed and her 15-year-old classmate was injured Tuesday night when they were struck by a van on 8 Mile Road at Evergreen Road in west Detroit.

They had just left fall cheerleading tryouts at Henry Ford High School and were walking back from getting ice cream. Athletic Director Ken Flowers rushed to the scene after hearing about the accident involving the two girls.

"This is terrible ... I'm at a loss for words right now," he said. "The impact on the (van) right now, you see that dent, it's terrible. I'm just at a loss for words. I'm kind of shaken right now."

After getting ice cream, the students were crossing 8 Mile Road at Evergreen Road when they were struck. The 15-year-old girl remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Family members have identified the 14-year-old victim as Timesha Danill-Taylor.

Grief counselors have been available at the high school.

"Let's pray. Let's come together. Let's pray, that's all we can do," said Flowers.

The 54-year-old man who was driving the van has been cooperating with police. Detroit police say the crash is under investigation.
