Vandals strike at Oakland County school

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Vandals covered walls, dumpsters and even a van with obnoxious racial slurs, vulgar pornographic words and images.

The Apollo Center functions as a an early education school and as the headquarters for the Community Sharing Outreach  Center.

The center services between 300-400 families a month. They run a food pantry, but also have clothing, pet supplies and help with financial assistance.

The vandals used spray paint to cover the center’s van in graffiti.

“Fortunately one of our volunteers, who takes really great care of the van, had just waxed it and got to it in time to rub all the paint off,” Roberta Lennie said

Lennie runs the volunteer program at the Apollo Center.

She said they were looking at thousands in damages, had they not gotten lucky with the van, and those monies can be spent on families with real problems.

In addition to the spray paint, the vandals broke into an area that holds items for two garage sales the center holds yearly. Those garage sales fund the food pantry for nearly half the year.

The vandals decided to crush some decorative holiday reindeer that had been donated to the sale.

The Oakland County Sheriff  is asking anyone with information on who is responsible for the vandalism to contact the sheriff's office.

Lennie and her army of volunteers would also be so grateful for any items that could be donated for their upcoming garage sale.

Household items are always popular, as are tools or any other treasures you might come up with.
