Video shows Detroit police officer deliver knockout punch at Southfield bowling alley

Detroit police believe officer acted in self-defense at Plum Hollow Lanes

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Video shows a man deliver a knockout punch to another man last week inside a Southfield bowling alley.

Detroit police confirmed the man throwing the punch is an officer who was off-duty at the time.

Regina Riley was the officer's friend for 10 years. That was until, she said, she cut off her relationship with him. Riley said it was a member of her own bowling league team who the officer laid out in what she called an unprovoked attack.

It was league night at Plum Hollow Lanes. Riley's mother found her tires were flat in the parking lot. Riley accused the officer of having his girlfriend slash her mother's tires. That's when her bowling teammate walked up to the man. Riley said her friend never even said a word. The officer went on the defensive immediately, then started punching her teammate, she said.

"'Why the (expletive) you walking up on me?' Then bam, bam, bam, he went to the ground and he was snoring, immediately," said Riley.

Medics went to the alley to treat the victim, who was knocked unconscious. However, he has refused to press charges.

Detroit police said an internal affairs investigation is underway. However, they believe their officer acted in self-defense. Police say he immediately notified his supervisor that he had knocked out another man.

"I believe they're showing favoritism because he's one of theirs," said Riley.
