Video shows intense high-speed chase between police and fugitive which ended in Livonia

Joshua Robinson, 21, of Wayne, arrested

LIVONIA, Mich. – Dashcam video shows police and a fugitive barreling up I-275 in a chase that began in Huron Township and ended in Livonia.

A police officer saw the driver around 4:45 p.m. Saturday blowing through multiple red lights on Silbey Road just west of Inkster Road. The officer tried to pull the car over, but the driver didn't stop.

At the peak of the chase, there were at least 10 police cruisers from Huron Township, Canton and the Michigan State Police involved in the chase. Speeds got up to more than 85 mph in the 24-mile chase.

"Our officer originally called out that he wasn't stopping, so he terminated it because it wasn't a reason to chase," Huron Township police Chief Everette Robbins said. "A short time later, our dispatch came back and let him know that the vehicle was stolen, and at that point he re-initiated the chase."

The driver took police on a detour through an industrial complex before getting on northbound I-275. At first, officers tried to box the driver in and, at times, he was able to squeeze past the flashing lights.

State police joined the pursuit and officers made sure the driver didn't get off the freeway. Video shows him rear-ending a patrol car while trying to exit.

"It's almost like a chess game," Robbins said. "You're really trying to put the pieces where you can safely. Make sure that he's not getting off of those exits. Make sure he's not endangering more people than need be. On a freeway, you have a little bit more space, a lot less stoplights, and we were really able to contain that."

The man was able to get off on Farmington Road. After hitting a cruiser, he was forced off the road near 6 Mile Road.

Joshua Robinson, 21, of Wayne, was arrested.

"There could have been a very bad outcome in this, all over a stolen car -- something that ultimately he's going to have to deal with anyway -- and now he just made it worse," Robbins said.

Robinson is facing a long list of felonies, including fleeing a police officer, assault with a dangerous weapon, malicious destruction of police property and resisting arrest.

He's being held behind bars, police said.
