Vigil held for 7-year-old girl shot, killed

Two in custody released Thursday

DETROIT – A vigil was held Friday evening to remember a 7-year-old shot and killed on Detroit’s west side.

Chanell Berry was mourned by dozens of family, friends and neighbors on Steel Street where the shooting occurred Dec. 27.

Police believe an argument at a Christmas gathering led to one woman leaving and threatening to come back with a gun. Berry, as well as her friend Ellen Garjo, 8, was shot while opening Christmas presents.

“She threatened my family and said she was coming back,” said Martell Johnson, Berry’s brother. “We just want justice. She needs to be in jail for life.”

A man and a woman were taken into custody but were subsequently released Thursday. Police described the woman as a “person of interest” and the man as a “possible suspect.”

“Monday is her birthday and we’re burying her on her birthday,” said Gwen Sparks. “It’s just not right.”

Garjo is still in critical condition.

Currently, police have not made an arrest.
