Waterford man with 7 drunken driving arrests accused of leaving crash scene with sons in car

Steven Matthews arrested in 7 drunken driving incidents

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Waterford man with a long history of driving violations was arrested after police said he drove drunk and left the scene of a crash with his children in the car.

Steven Fredrick Matthews, 41, was arraigned Thursday on charges of operating while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license and failure to stop after a collision.

Police said Matthews hit a parked 2015 Mercedes with his 1998 Buick on May 27 near Woodward Avenue and Square Lake Road. His two sons were in the car. He allegedly left the scene.

Court documents say Matthews was intoxicated and also had a controlled substance in the vehicle. Birmingham police finally caught up with him and got him off the road.

Matthews' driving record shows violation after violation over three decades.

His records show a speeding violation in 1993 and his first drunken driving arrest in 1994. His license was also suspended. It appears that Matthews never got his license reinstated and has been driving without a license ever since.

The most recent arrest was Matthews’ seventh alleged drunken driving incident. He also has a history of crashes and police chases, according to his record.

Why would the courts allow Matthews to continue driving? Bloomfield Township police refused to answer any questions Thursday about Matthews and his latest case on multiple occasions.

Matthews was given a $200,000 cash bond and ordered to get his license validated. He will have to blow into a Breathalyzer if he gets behind the wheel again.

Matthews will have to return to court, and he's been ordered to stay away from his sons and the people he hit.
