Man accused of assaulting cop in courthouse arraigned

Investigators say attacker also assaulted Taylor officer 4 weeks ago

DETROIT – Deandre Wilson, the 29-year-old Westland man accused of assaulting a police officer in a courthouse, was arraigned Saturday and received a $300,000 cash bond. Wilson is charged with two counts of resisting and obstructing a police officer. His preliminary exam is scheduled for Jan. 15 at 9 a.m.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Department says the injured deputy is Crystal Dominguez, a 7-year veteran.

According to investigators, Wilson hit her Friday morning at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice. Wilson was arriving at court as a non-custody defendant.

He's also accused of assaulting a Taylor officer about four weeks ago.

Lt. Gerard Pryor described what happened on Friday.

"He was instructed to remove his jacket. He did so at that time. As he passed through the metal detector he was placing his jacket back on his person and once he had his jacket on he just turned toward officer Dominguez, striking her one time in the head area," said Pryor.

The deputy was knocked unconscious but is recovering at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Witnesses said the attack came out of nowhere.

"It's crazy. How can you be in a public place like this with police officers all around you, and you're just going to hit an officer with 10 guys around you?" said Luther Mallicoat, who saw the attack.

Sheriff Benny Napoleon said Wilson was being accompanied by a social worker, but security officers never were notified that he already was accused of assaulting another officer.

"We would have appreciated that. The social worker -- the case care worker -- obviously knew that, and it would have been a very nice courtesy if we were made aware of that," said Napoleon.

Several other deputies quickly subdued Wilson.

It's not clear why Wilson had a social worker with him. Sheriff Napoleon indicated Wilson has been under the supervision of the Wayne County probate court.

Charges are pending.
