WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – A now-former counselor at the Jewish Community Center's day camp who faces child pornography charges appeared in court Tuesday afternoon.
Matthew Kuppe, who federal investigators say was filming young boys in a locker room at the camp, had a detention hearing. He mouthed "I love you" to his parents when they entered the courtroom.
His parents, through defense attorneys, promised to supervise their 21-year-old son 24/7 if he was was freed under house arrest and on a tether. Attorneys argued the former honor student has strong family support.
However, Judge Vivian Patrick ruled his release was not worth the risk to the community.
Kuppe exchanged emails about one of the photographed boys with an undercover officer this month, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday. Moreover, Kuppe is accused of receiving other emails containing child pornography.
He was arraigned Thursday and is being held at the Oakland County Jail.
Kuppe is a resident of West Bloomfield. He has worked for the Jewish Community Center (JCC) for two summers.
