DETROIT – A former camp counselor from the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield appeared in Federal Court Thursday for his plea hearing.
West Bloomfield native Matthew Kuppe pleaded guilty to distribution of child pornography. Kuppe entered this plea agreement with the government to serve 10 years in prison, and the other charges against him were dropped.
Federal Judge Avern Cohn asked the defendant a series of questions before honoring the plea agreement that was presented. He will be required to pay $5,000 to the court and restitution to the victims if an amount is set.
A pre-sentence investigation was ordered and Kuppe is required to undergo a psychological evaluation, per Judge Cohn.
Kuppe originally pleaded not guilty to six counts of production, possession, receipt and distribution of child pornography. Federal investigators said he took pictures of campers and sent them to a Russia-based child porn website.
