Sheriff's Office: Passengers' fight may have led to deadly crash on I-94

Victim was passenger in car that crashed near Shook Road

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A fight between two passengers in a pickup truck Thursday morning on Interstate 94 may have caused its driver to lose control and crash, causing one of the passengers to be ejected, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said.

Ceara Abbott, 20, the driver of the 2001 Ford F-150, called 911 to report being in the crash in the westbound lanes near Shook Road.

The back seat passenger, a 21 year-old Eastpointe woman, got into a physical fight with the front-seat passenger, a 21-year-old Roseville woman, the Sheriff's Office said. As the women fought, the driver lost control and struck a guardrail.

The Roseville woman, Samantha Mary Mullins, was thrown from the pickup truck and pronounced dead at McLaren Macomb Hospital.

Abbott was arrested and taken to McLaren Hospital where blood was drawn pursuant to a search warrant. Toxicology results are pending. She was arraigned Thursday afternoon on charges of operating while intoxicated causing death and second offense operating while intoxicated.

She is being held in the Macomb County Jail on a $50,000 cash-or-surety bond.
