Police: Driver struck by vehicle on I-96 in Detroit after struggle with state trooper

'Disoriented' driver runs into traffic, police say

DETROIT – A man was hit by a car on Interstate 96 early Thursday morning when he ran into traffic near the local lane Grand River Avenue exit, Michigan State Police said.

A trooper who responded to a 911 call just before 6 a.m. about a car stopped in the interstate found the driver disoriented and smelling of intoxicants.

When the driver got out of the car, the trooper tried to stop him from going into traffic, police said.

The driver became combative and the trooper used a Taser on him, but it didn't have an effect.

The driver ran out into the roadway and was hit by a car.

He was taken to a hospital and later died from his injuries.

No one else was hurt.

The westbound local lanes of I-96 were closed at Grand River for a couple  of hours -- but have since reopened.
