What dollar store deals are deals, which items are duds?

DETROIT – Who doesn't love a bargain for a buck?  Sometimes even a dollar store deal is just not worth the cash.  

From wrapping paper to dish towels to shampoo and more - you can find it all at dollar discounts stores.  But Kiplinger is keeping a close eye on what's really worth the money.

From horns to the hats, party store supplies are a great deal for a dollar.  Take foil balloons for example.  At some stores they can cost up to $8.  At dollar stores it is just a buck and the helium is usually free.

Vitamins are not a deal.  Consumer Reports found that dollar store vitamins don't always have the amount of nutrients claimed on the label and they don't absorb fast enough to get into your body.

Another good deal is cleaning supplies.  According to Good Housekeeping, the cleaners you buy at the discount stores work just as well as higher priced items.

Finally, although a dollar for a toy is temping, studies show they can contain unsafe levels of lead and other chemicals.
