Arrest made in Sterling Heights hit-and-run that killed mother

Driver fled scene after hitting victims

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – A 22-year-old Sterling Heights man is under arrest for allegedly hitting and killing a 47-year-old woman who was pushing her teenage son in a wheelchair.

Police had been looking for the driver of a red Cadillac after it hit the woman Monday night near the corner of 14 Mile and Ryan roads. The 15-year-old son was not seriously hurt.

Police said Tuesday morning they found the Cadillac in Highland Park, and the suspect was taken into custody on charges of operating with the presence of drugs causing death, driving with a suspended license causing death and leaving the scene of a fatal injury accident.

According to Sterling Heights Police Lt. Dave Smith, the use of drugs are believed to be a factor in the accident.
