Woman run over, killed while working at Ecorse steel plant

Company: US Steel employee fatally injured in accident

ECORSE, Mich. – A woman was killed after she was run over by a semi-truck Saturday at a steel plant in Ecorse.

The U.S. Steel employee was fatally injured in an accident involving ALCO Transportation at Great Lakes Works Cold Mill Shipping, the company said in a written statement to Local 4.

Heather Warren left for work Saturday morning like any other day. She was killed on the job Saturday afternoon.

Family members said they found out from a coworker. They now want answers.

Warren worked at U.S. Steel for three years. Her family said she was hit and killed by a tractor trailer while directing trucks in the loading area. Her family believes Warren wasn't properly trained to direct semi-trucks.

Warren leaves behind a large family, including six siblings, nieces, nephews and her mother.

Family members said officials from U.S. Steel came to the home hours after the accident.

"We take the safety of our employees very seriously and we will work closely with the United Steel workers and other agencies in the investigation," the company said in a statement. "The company expresses our deepest sympathies to the victim's family."

The truck driver who hit Warren was taken into custody. The prosecutor's office will decide if the driver will be charged.
