Milford's Karly Piper Shorr moves forward in slopestyle

Shorr advances directly to finals in new Olympic event for snowboarding

A Milford snowboarder had an exciting first day at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Karly Piper Shorr advanced directly to finals in slopestyle after competing in the qualification Thursday.

The semifinals and finals will be held Sunday Feb. 9.

Shorr, 19, is one of two Olympians from Milford competing in Sochi, Russia.

Danny Davis will be competing in halfpipe.

Shorr told Local 4 before she left she is more concerned about just being in the moment than trying to focus on winning gold.

"I'm more excited just to be riding the course and competing with everyone else and having fun.  I mean I'm just going to do my best," said Shorr.

Slopestyle is one of 12 new events at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

In slopestyle, snowboarders are judged on the variety of tricks they do on rails, boxes and jumps.
