Local 4's new Storm Pins app gives users real-time severe weather information

Weather spotting is now social with new smartphone app

WDIV-TV Local 4 released a new app today, called Local 4 StormPins, which will give users severe weather and breaking news information—in real time—via official storm spotters, emergency responders and concerned citizens. The Local 4 StormPins app was designed for mobile and tablet devices and is available now for download on iPhone and Android devices.

The app user will be able to generate videos, share photos and engage in 2-way chat.  They will be able to instantly share information about tornadoes, hail, flooded roads, downed trees or power lines, and more.

All content is geo-tagged, creating a real-time map that can also be broadcast live on TV. The shared platform filters out false information or multiple reports of the same incident.

"We are so excited about this launch. Local 4 StormPins harnesses the power of social media and makes real-time data available to our newsroom and viewers," said vice-president and general manager Marla Drutz.

With its colorful and visually stunning graphics, this app is easy to use and can also be a way for viewers to share pictures and video of non-emergency happenings, such as a beautiful sunset or rainbow.

"People want to reach out during emergencies. This app gives citizens a way to communicate potentially dangerous situations to others in their community while having access to official information from our station and emergency and first responders," said Kim Voet, WDIV News Director.

Here's how it works:

1. Download the free app StormPins from your mobile device's app store.

2. Tap the "Drop Pin" button on the footer bar.

3. Once your phone has identified your location, tap the "Drop Pin" button in the top left corner.
