Local high school student wins Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra competition

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Skyline High School student and young violinist Minji Kim is the winner of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artists Competition.

Kim, 16, won $1,000 and the chance to perform with the orchestra’s musicians during the Link Up youth concert on March 19, 2024.

Having studied violin since the age of 4, Kim has won musical competitions, participated in youth orchestras and intensive musical caps, and played at famous venues such as Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, New York. She studies with University of Michigan School of Music, Theater, and Dance professor Professor Aaron Berofsky, and helps to teach children at the Korean School of Ann Arbor in her free time.

Young Artist Competition runner-up Kevin Baek has studied cello since age 7. As a junior at Okemos High School Junior, he studies with Professor Amir Eldan at the U-M School of Music, Theater, and Dance. He has participated in several ensembles and symphonies and won the Lansing Matinee Musicale Performing Arts Students String Competition. He won $500 as the runner-up.

Kim and Baek were two of four finalists to compete at Eastern Michigan University on Oct. 14 where a panelist jury of A2SO orchestra members judged performances.

Applications for the competition were open to Michigan students in grades 7-12.
