ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Ann Arbor firefighters rescued a fifth kayaker after being called to a popular river while four others were being helped to dry land.

Firefighters said they got a 911 call around 5 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2025, about two kayakers who had gone overboard and needed help.

When they arrived, four kayakers were already being helped to dry land by other people, firefighters said.

There was some conflicted information about the situation, so firefighters continued to search the river. They said they found a fifth person who had gone overboard and was hanging onto a kayak near Bandemer Park.

No 911 calls had reported the fifth kayaker. Fire crews said it was lucky that they double checked the river.

“When river conditions are rough for one, it is often rough for others,” they said.

The next day, firefighters were called to Gallup Park because someone got hurt jumping into the river from the Gallup Bridge, they said.

That person was found with minor injuries and is expected to be OK.

The Ann Arbor Fire Department reminded people to take proper precautions in the Huron River and asked them not to jump off bridges into the water. The depth is constantly changing and the river is filled with debris, they said.

Anyone on the river should wear a personal flotation device, they said.
