ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Two teenagers and a child are facing charges in an Ann Arbor shooting that killed another teen.
The shooting happened Friday, Sept. 26, outside a strip mall near the intersection of Packard Street and Platt Road.
Police said an 18-year-old man from Westland was wounded during a shootout after he exited a business. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries.
A first responder working traffic enforcement reportedly spotted a vehicle leaving the scene. The officer chased the vehicle, which crashed into a tree near Lorraine Street.
Three people were taken into custody shortly after the crash.
Police believe the shooting was targeted and not random, though the motive remains unclear.
The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office has authorized charges against the three.
19-year-old Jahmal Jones faces charges including open murder, carrying a concealed weapon, converting a semi-automatic firearm to fully automatic, fleeing and eluding, two counts of resisting and obstructing and felony firearm. Jones was denied bond and remanded to the Washtenaw County Jail.
18-year-old Kaleel Burton faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon and converting a semi-automatic firearm to fully automatic. His bond was set at $250,000, and he remains in jail.
An unnamed juvenile faces charges of open murder and converting a semi-automatic firearm to fully automatic. He is being held in juvenile detention until his court date.
