“He’s been great in the meeting rooms. The players have embraced him as he’s embraced them in the culture,” said Alford.

On Marshall, Alford praised his selflessness and team-first attitude.

“Marshall has met expectations and accepted giving up carries to Haynes without complaint,” Alford said. “He’s been great in the meeting room. He’s a leader.”

Alford explained that the decision to give more carries to Haynes stems from his exceptional performance over five games.

“We go with the hot hand,” Alford said, noting the situation could change.

Alford also reflected on his relationship with Haynes, which dates back to high school.

When Haynes entered the transfer portal, Alford was his first call.

“He said, ‘I’d like to be coached by you,’ and it worked out,” Alford recalled.

Asked about comparisons to other players, Alford avoided them, emphasizing that each player is unique.

Regarding Heisman talk for Haynes, Alford said, “I just want to get better and play the best we can.”

USC Trojans

Alford addressed the run defense of their upcoming game against the USC Trojans, highlighting their athleticism and strong defensive players.

He called the matchup a big challenge and a potential defining moment of the season.

Outside zone runs

On the offensive side, Alford discussed the use of outside zone runs and sprint-out draws, noting they are part of the game plan based on what the offensive line can execute and defensive tendencies.

Alford said outside zone runs help get Haynes in space for one-on-one matchups, which suits his skill set.
