Ann Arbor pediatric urologist arrested on child sexual abuse material charges

He was arrested following a cyber tip routed through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A pediatric urologist from Ann Arbor who worked at a children’s hospital in Toledo, Ohio, was arrested on six charges related to child sexually abusive material, according to Michigan State Police.

Dr. Bryan Sack, 42, a children’s urology doctor, was employed at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Toledo for about 18 months.

He was arrested following a cyber tip routed through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, investigators said.

Michigan State police said the tip led to an investigation by their Computer Crimes Unit and the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit.

Detectives then obtained a search warrant for Sack’s home, where they seized digital evidence.

He’s facing six charges.

Two counts of aggravated child sexual abuse material possession, one charge of child sexual abuse material possession, and three charges of use of a computer to commit a crime.

Authorities emphasized that, at this time, none of the apparent victims in the case are believed to have been Sack’s patients.

The MSP Computer Crimes Unit wasn’t able to provide additional details about the investigation, but urged parents and caregivers to remain vigilant about children’s online activity.

“The main piece is to keep that communication open and forthright and fast as you can,” Sgt. Kenneth Weismiller of the Michigan State Police said. “Knowing passwords for accounts, knowing what applications a child is using or contacted through are all good things to encourage.”

Nationwide Children’s Hospital confirmed Sack’s employment and released the following statement.

“We have been made aware of the arrest of Bryan Sack, MD, who was employed at Nationwide Children’s Hospital – Toledo for approximately 18 months.

We are deeply shocked and concerned by this situation.

Upon learning of the charge, Dr. Sack was immediately terminated and no longer has access to our patients, facilities or medical records.

At this time, our understanding from law enforcement is that the charges are not related to his clinical work including Nationwide Children’s – Toledo. We are committed to the safety, support, and privacy of all children and will continue to monitor this situation closely."
