Michigan basketball hires former NBA G League head coach Dylan Murphy as assistant coach

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan has hired former Osceola Magic head coach Dylan Murphy as an assistant men’s basketball coach, first-year Wolverines coach Mike Boynton Jr. announced Monday.

Murphy joins the defending Michigan Wolverines after spending eight seasons with the Orlando Magic organization, where he advanced from basketball operations analyst to NBA assistant coach before leading the franchise’s NBA G League affiliate, the Osceola Magic, for the past three seasons.

Murphy guided Osceola to three consecutive Eastern Conference No. 1 playoff seeds from 2023-26 while overseeing the team’s basketball operations and serving as a key figure in Orlando’s player development system.

In March 2025, he was named NBA G League Coach of the Month after leading the Magic to an 11-3 record and the league’s top overall playoff seed.

Murphy also coached Orlando’s NBA Summer League team in Las Vegas in 2024.

During his tenure, Murphy coached 2024 NBA G League MVP Mac McClung and helped McClung earn first-team All-NBA G League honors in 2024 and 2025. Lester Quinones was a first-team selection in 2026, while Trevelin Queen earned second-team honors in 2024.

Kevon Harris, Queen and Quinones also were selected to the NBA G League Next Up Game during Murphy’s time with the organization.

Murphy helped nine players earn NBA call-ups while leading Osceola.

Before becoming the G League head coach, Murphy spent five seasons with the Orlando Magic.

He served as an assistant coach from 2020-23 under Steve Clifford and Jamahl Mosley after beginning his tenure as a basketball operations analyst from 2018-20.

His responsibilities included scouting, game preparation, analytics, and player development.

Murphy began his professional coaching career with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, serving as an assistant coach from 2013-16.

The Mad Ants won the 2014 NBA Development League championship after finishing with the league’s best regular-season record and returned to the league finals in 2015.

He spent the 2016-17 season as an NBA Development League scout for the Atlanta Hawks before serving briefly as a graduate assistant at Ball State.

Murphy joined the Orlando Magic organization in 2018.
