Detroit – The Old Newsboys' Goodfellow Fund of Detroit, today (Sales Day) collected $43,340. Added to the pre-sales total of $375,586, the total raised to date is $418,926, which is 32 percent of this years goal of $1.3 million. The money is needed to pay for the 35,000 Christmas packages that will be distributed this holiday season. Packages go to one out of three Detroit, Highland Park, Hamtramck and River Rouge children between 4 and 13 years.
The packages contain jeans, a sweatshirt, warm hat, scarf and gloves, underwear, socks, a toothbrush, candy, books and a toy. Girls between 4 and 11 years of age also get a dressed doll. It is a unique organization in that all money donated goes toward helping the children. Administrative costs are paid by the Goodfellow members. "We have already purchased and packed the boxes for this year," said Goodfellow President Mike Coakley. "We did it on credit. Now we must collect the money to pay the bill."
