HOWELL, Mich. – A letter is revealing something that's been kept secret for 30 years.
Last Friday, a letter with two crisp $100 bills arrived the Country Squire Fireplace and Lighting store in Howell.
The letter was signed "Remorseful" and explained that 30 years ago the writer had needed a glass fireplace door but couldn't afford it, so it was stolen.
"I am sorry to say I took the glass door and left," the letter reads.
The letter's writer mentions a recent story about a man in Seattle who repaid money he had stolen from a Sears cash register 60 years ago.
"This jogged my memory of what I did 30 years ago. So, I am doing the same," the letter reads.
Store owner Bob Urban said the $200 covers the cost of the door from back then, plus interest.
"As I've been thinking about it, I just thought everything maybe I've done or anybody I know has done that we might regret over the years comes back to haunt you," Urban said. "It may be a lesson that we should avoid those things."
Urban said the money will go to charity.
