Red Cross encouraging people to donate blood across metro Detroit this January

DETROIT – January is National Blood Donor Month.

The American Red Cross is encouraging people to make a lifesaving commitment by donating blood to help ensure a sufficient blood supply in the new year.

National Blood Donor Month has been observed in January since 1970, and highlights the importance of volunteering as well as the positive impact that can be made on patient healthcare.

Blood donors of all types are needed to maintain a sufficient supply. Eligible donors with types O, B negative and A negative blood are encouraged to donate.

Giving blood takes approximately one hour. Donors must be in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be 17 years of age or older. To make an appointment to donate, you can register online here, or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
