Belle of the Ball: Free prom dresses for local girls in need

DETROIT – Prom night is a dream for so many girls, but for some, attending prom can be too expensive.

That's the whole idea behind the annual "Belle of the Ball" giveaway in Detroit. The event is gearing up for its ninth go around.

The event is sponsored by Alisha Bell, Wayne County Commission Vice-Chair, of Detroit.  Bell says "Belle of the Ball" is about making sure local girls unable to afford expensive prom gowns get their dream dresses in time for prom night.

During the giveaway, girls will have their pick of free formal and semi-formal dresses, shoes, purses, and jewelry.

The giveaway is made possible by generous donations from local businesses and volunteers.

Donations for this year's giveaway have ended.

Here's information on when this year's "Belle of the Ball" will happen:

When: Saturday, April 9 from 10 a.m. to Noon

Where: The Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan, 16500 Tireman, Detroit, MI, 48228

More than 100 dresses were given away last year. Bell said another big turnout is expected this year.
