Kia recalling some Rio cars over air bag sensor issue

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says sensor could fail to detect passenger is child

DETROIT – Kia Motors of America is recalling nearly 73,000 of its Rio cars from the 2006 through 2008 model years for a problem with an air bag sensor.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a passenger front seat air bag sensor that is used to determine if a child is in the seat could crack and fail – causing the air bag to inflate.

Airbags are not supposed to deploy when children are in the seat because of the higher risk of injury.

Kia will notify owners and dealers in July about replacing the sensor.

Rio owners can contact the Kia Consumer Assistance Center at 800-333-4542.

Kia's safety recall campaign number is SC097. Customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236
