Labor Day sales: What to buy, what not to buy

Help Me Hank Labor Day consumer alert

DETROIT – Bargain shoppers know the Labor Day weekend is a good time to snap up savings on many items. However, you also want to know which items are on the deepest discount, and which items you can buy later and save even more money.

"The holiday weekend offers major savings opportunities," said consumer finance expert Andrea Woroch. "Not everything marked on sale is a good buy."

Her website offers a detailed list of what items are really marked down, and which items you might want to buy later in the year. Here are some of the highlights. Woroch says you should look for hot deals on the following.

1) Swimsuits and summer apparel
2) Garden and outdoor items
3) New cars
4) Travel
5) Back-to-school items

On the other hand, she says bargain hunters should wait to buy fall clothing. Woroch says you should look for better deals on fall apparel and shoes during the Columbus Day weekend. She says the same goes for winter clothes, toys, and Halloween items. She says Halloween items go on sale around Oct. 15 when stores start to make room for Christmas items.

Other deals and discounts

Help Me Hank also checked with the website WalletHub.com. That consumer site has been tracking what America's biggest retailers will be offering this Labor Day and predicts great deals on dishwashers, microwaves, televisions and fancy recliners.

For example, WalletHub.com says you could find a Kenmore Built-In Dishwasher for more than 46 percent off at Sears, or a Rocket Recliner at Big Lots at  44 percent off.

No matter what you're looking for this Labor Day, do some research online before heading to the store. There are several retail experts that can help you maximize your savings on the holiday weekend.
