When it comes to music, what’s old is new again.
From Taylor Swift to The Beatles -- musicians of all genres, of all eras are jumping on the streaming service bandwagon. It’s 2016 and some people only listen to their favorite songs through earbuds.

But while some big musicians, like Adele, are holding out against streaming on Spotify and Apple Music – no one is holding out on vinyl.
Personally, my collection of vinyl has tripled over the last year. After receiving a Crosley turn-table as I gift, I decided to embrace what millennials might call -- an oversized CD and now I’m hooked.
Our turntable is the focal point of our living room. We even have crates full of vinyl that flank our fireplace. So what gives? What is it about putting a needle on a record?
I asked a music expert, my dad, Doug Podell of 94.7 WCSX.
“It's all about the sound, in my opinion,” said Podell. “Digital has never had the same quality sound the way a 180 gram vinyl album does on a turntable.”
“I also think just the experience of holding, playing and flipping a record of your favorite artist makes listening more enjoyable,” Doug said. “Sure, digital is convenient but albums are personal.”
If you’re a collector, then you know there are record store gems scattered across Metro Detroit:
Melodies & Memories – 23013 Gratiot Ave, Eastpointe
Found Sound – 234 W. 9 Mile Rd, Ferndale
Weirdsville Records – 61 Macomb Place, Mt. Clemens
Encore Records – 417 E. Liberty St, Ann Arbor
The newst addition, Third Man Records – 441 Canfield, Detroit
But on Jan. 23, you can head to Oakland Mall to get all things vinyl at the 94.7 WCSX Classic Rock Swap. Vendors will be set up ready to buy, sell and trade your LPs, CDs and music memorabilia.
“There hasn't been a great record show like this, at a mall, in years,” said Doug, emcee of the event. “Record shows are few and far between and this gives the buyer so many options when it comes to selection and price.”
So, who is your favorite artist?
Rather than popping in their CD or listening through blue tooth in your car – experience their music on vinyl – you might just get hooked like me!
