‘Shucked’ at the Fisher Theater is a shucking good time

It’s not every day that you describe a Broadway musical as a show “about corn,” but that’s exactly what “Shucked” is about.

OK, so it’s a lot more about just corn, but in this Tony-winning musical, you will learn a tale of how the people in Cobb County were able to get their corn to grow again.

While that sounds super serious, “Shucked” is the complete opposite. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Broadway show that was so joke heavy. From dad jokes, puns, and just pure stupidity, I was smiling and laughing through both acts of this musical.

Aside from being hilarious, “Shucked” also has a great score, with songs that are meant to resemble southern country music, yet isn’t cheesy. I’m not a huge fan of country music, but I thoroughly enjoyed the music from “Shucked.”

And let’s get into the vocals for just a minute. Standout performances came from Nick Bailey, who plays “Beau,” and Miki Abraham, who plays “LuLu.” A major shout out to Bailey, who brought the house down with his vocals every time he took to the stage.

Even though “Shucked” is a total laugh fest, it also has a lot of heart, which is exactly what you want from a Broadway musical. Some of the jokes may be a tiny bit inappropriate for the kids, but I also bet a lot of the jokes will just go straight over their heads.

“Shucked” is playing at the Fisher Theater until Jan. 4. I could not recommend seeing the show enough! I saw it on Broadway when it first debuted a few years ago, and it was just as good on tour, too!
