Bennington was married with six children from two wives. He had been with Linkin Park since 1996.

Linkin Park's debut studio album "Hybrid Theory" was released in 2000. The album catapulted the band into the spotlight and commercial success with singles "One Step Closer," "Crawling," "Papercut" and "In the End." Bennington's vocals covered his personal struggles including child abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, failed relationships and isolation. It showcased as much teenage angst as it did hopeful reflection on a past life.

With Bennington's lyrics and recognizable delivery, Linkin Park became known as the ultimate "nu-metal" band. The genre is known for a combination of metal, hip hop and alternative rock.

In a 2009 interview with NOISECREEP, Bennington discussed his past struggle with addiction:

“I don’t have a problem with people knowing that I had a drinking problem. That’s who I am and I’m kind of lucky in a lot of ways cause I get to do something about it. I get to grow as a person through it. It’s kind of a cool thing. It’s not cool to be an alcoholic, meaning it’s not cool to go drink and be a dumbass. It’s cool to be a part of recovery," he said

Bennington recently paid tribute to Chris Cornell, who killed himself in Detroit earlier this year.
