Legacy of Literacy hosts Highland Park event to promote reading

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. – The 7th annual Literacy in the Park event took place in Highland Park Saturday.

The event is part of the mission of the Legacy of Literacy organization, founded by Alma Greer. Greer retired from teaching years ago, but continues to spread her passion for literacy to young boys and girls.

The organization became a nonprofit in 2014. It works with a number of groups in the community, schools and businesses to promote reading. The initiatives include Literacy in the Park, Real Men Read, and Real Kids Read.

The event on Saturday featured authors and 9-year-old King Thomas Moore, who is a poet. The authors and Moore read to the community. There was also food and music, and each child was able to leave with two free books.

Greer has a passion for reading and spreading literacy throughout her community and plans to continue running Literacy in the Park for years to come.
