Pizza has become one of the most comforting American foods. At this point, it’s likely more American than Italian.
We’re a culture of die hard pizza people with definitive opinions about what pizza is best. For that reason, it is not reasonable to write about the best pizzas around.
Instead, this is about the most craveable pizzas for me right now in Metro Detroit. If you’re craving just a slice, scroll to the bottom for some top slice spots.

Cowabunga Supreme at Michigan and Trumbull
Obviously, Detroit-style pizza is something that is best done in Detroit. While this is not the only Detroit-style on the list, this is the best example of what that means. With a crust that shares crispy, melted cheese and dough to form the perfect crunch and chew, the edges are so well dialed in to achieve the perfect example of a pan pizza.
The simple sauce of quality hand-crushed tomatoes and minimal seasoning dabbed on top balances with the supreme pizza toppings of pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, bell pepper, and black olive. This pizza is everything one would remember about growing up in the 80s or 90s with the Ninja Turtles and Red Wings hockey in the background while slamming a hot and cheesy pizza and taking a swig of a cold Coca-Cola.
The Supino at Supino Pizzeria
In the round pizza game, a fresh Supino pie stands far above the rest. Whether you eat it at the restaurant, in your car, or the second you get home, you’ll understand that the dough, sauce, cheese combo is always a huge winner. That being said, my immediate craving is not usually for a saucy cheese and pep slice. Instead, they have a pizza called the Supino. Starting with red sauce on their secret dough recipe, you’ll get hunks of delicious roasted garlic pillows to chomp on, paired along with Kalamata olives, chili oil, and creamy ricotta cheese. That’s a pizza that rips any pizza apart in terms of unique flavor and long-lasting taste.
A Bar Pie at Grandma Bob’s
Another contender in the Detroit-style pizza arena is Grandma Bob’s. A beautiful variety of pizza choices gets you excited to jump all across the menu. However, the lesser known and discussed Bar Pie is the simplicity and perfection that makes one wonder why no one is talking about it! Meant to be eaten in one sitting, a bar pie is a classic thin-crust pizza served in bars across the East Coast. This is, for some reason, a pizza not commonly found in our area.
When you first take a bite, it’s almost impossible not to smash the whole thing by yourself. Even after eating a whole pizza, you might take another to crush at home or even in the car ride on the way to the house, since it’s not super messy or heavy.
The Mary Did Have at Motor City Brewing Works
Inside of the cozy brewery in the Cass Corridor, they’ve got a kitchen with a pizza oven. Their pizza has been a huge reason why so many people call this place their little secret for lunch or dinner. Breaking it down with ingredients reminiscent of Metro Detroit’s Mediterranean flavors, you’ve got olive oil, fresh ground lamb roasted with garlic, mint, and pine nuts, feta cheese, tomatoes and za’atar spice, topped with labneh and fresh cucumber.
For a short period of time, they took this item off the menu, and the community got so up in arms that it had to be brought back.
Sicilian Sfinguini at Bommarito Bakery
It took Anthony Lombardo of SheWolf to show me the way on this. Bommarito Bakery is an east-side Italian staple, and every person waiting in line will be sure to tell you how long they’ve been going there, why it’s the best, what they order, and why no one is better. The thing not even many of those patrons know about is the Sfinguini. A legit Sicilian pizza that is spoken about as the precursor to our Detroit-style. Authentic Sicilian-style thick crust with pizza sauce, onion, parmesan cheese, seasoned bread crumbs, topped with olive oil. The hack is for sure to order it with anchovies. This leaves you speechless and slightly stinky. Beyond worth it.
Double Pepperoni Pizza at Palazzo Di Pizza
After one try this skyrocketed to the top of the Detroit-style pizza cravings. In Royal Oak, this is worth the drive no matter where you’re coming from. With a blend of cheeses, pepperoni both under the cheese and greasy cup pepperoni and heavy flat “char” pepperoni both sitting on top, the pooled, spiced red sauce on top of that, and a generous grating of fresh Parmigiano Reggiano.
It’s juicy and mouth watering as you’re biting into it. It’s not often that bite after bite, a person would get hungrier, but here we are.
The Big Slice at Little Caesars Arena, Comerica Park, or any other large event space
Yeah, it’s Little Caesars, but it’s so different. For some reason, this slice of pizza cake in an individual box reigns supreme over any typical Little Caesars shop you’ll find. With the crispy edges you want in a greasy format, this is the number one thing to get at the game. Whenever we go to a game, we go to our seats, then immediately track down the closest Little Caesars. It’s a true treat, the way it was meant to be.
Plain Cheese or Pepperoni at Roman Village
In the south end of Dearborn, just on the other side of Patton Park from Detroit, the Rugiero family has been operating this Italian-American gem for over 60 years. From pastas to fish, chicken, and salads, this large restaurant has been a dining staple for many who grew up in the factory-driven neighborhood and its outskirts. No matter the occasion, a pizza is necessary. Their thin, round, cheesy, greasy pie with the little greasy pepperoni cups is unmatched in flavor and texture. Believe it or not, this is the place that started my (and anyone else who I grew up with) obsession with ranch as a dip for pizza. Their ranch rivals the best ranch you’ve ever had, and they’ll usually serve it to you in a soup dish for healthy dipping.
Cheese, Pepperoni, Mushroom square at Loui’s
The coziest of all restaurants, Loui’s is a blast from the past Italian establishment that fills you with so much nostalgia, even if you’ve never been there before. With walls riddled with empty, signed bottles of chianti, you sit down and enjoy the sweet chewy crunch of a legit Detroit-style from the family of one of the first to do it in the original Buddy’s location back when they first started.
This is the pizza you had when you were a kid with your family and thought, “yeah, I could eat this every day until I roll down the street.” Being reminded of a dinner out with your grandparents feels so nice.
Cliff’s Pizza
Truly, if you know, you know. Follow Cliff on Instagram, wait for him to post about pizza ordering being open, order ASAP, then, when given your time, drive to his home for a driveway pick up of one of the most unique Detroit-styles you’ve ever had.
Crunchy, almost fried dough in every direction, a spiced, savory sauce, a blend of cheese, and quality ingredients all combine to make the dirtiest (in the greatest way) cheese pull pizza you’ve ever sunk your mouth watering jaw into. Also, Cliff is the man.
