Grosse Pointe Park market closes after nearly a century

Mulier's Market owners say they're being pushed out by big-box stores

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. – Mulier's Market, perhaps best known for its meat counter, has been serving Michiganders since the 1920s.

Once the meat is gone, the Muliers are closing their doors for good. That could be as early as Friday night.

Mark Boyd has been a loyal customer to the Grosse Pointe Park store since 1974.

"When they told me they were closing, I was shocked. I went home and told my wife and she cried, " Boyd says.

Eugene Muiler and his son Paul have spent their lives at the market and Paul says closing is more bitter than sweet.

"You've got Kroger and other competition. People want big stores and want variety," he said.

His dad said "shopping changes, neighborhoods change, and consequently we're being pushed out."

Eugene's father and grandfather guided Muliers through World Wars and The Great Depression. But swift competition and our slumping economy was too much for the family-owned market.

Don't worry about Eugene.

"It's been a nice ride. Right now, I'm ready to retire and quit," he said.

As for son Paul, he has a real estate/construction background to fall back.

"Sooner or later our recipes will come out, HA HA," he joked.

The Mulier family wants to thank all of their loyal patrons for the decades of loyal shopping.

A Grosse Pointe family bought the Mulier's property and several others along Kercheval.  The family says they have only heard rumors of new restaurants, a microbrewery and condos in Grosse Pointe Park.

We'll let you know.
