The scientists in the study said, no matter how long a trantrum lasts or how often they happen, it follows three phases.
Phase one: The child begins yelling and screaming. Then the downward spiral begins.
Phase two: The child becomes physical and throws things.
Phase three: This is the sadness phase where the child cries and whines.
Researchers say the trick to dealing with tantrums is getting the child past the anger stage where they are throwing things and get them to the sadness phase because this is when the child is ready to reach out for comfort.
So how do you get past the anger phase? The scientists recommend you do nothing.
