The Perfect Place To Celebrate Oktoberfest

We Dine in the D at Dakota Inn Rathskeller, an Authentic German Restaurant

DETROIT

At the corner of John R and Dakota in Detroit is a friendly neighborhood restaurant dishing up some hearty German food, and plenty of pints of beer, it's called the Dakota Inn Rathskeller.

"Rathskeller is the basement of a city hall in Germany where dignitaries go after work to have a beer,” explains owner Karl Kurz.

He is the third generation of his family to run the Dakota Inn. It was started back in 1933 by Karl's grandfather.

He came over from Germany in 1912, worked for Ford Motor Company when he first got here… Then, the entrepreneur that he was, when prohibition went out in 1933 he actually bought a Chinese laundry, which was an existing building about a third of the size of what it is today, and renovated it into a rathskeller,” says Karl.

The restaurant looks very European with the tables and chairs made of dark wood, and the walls feature murals depicting German scenes. According to Karl, his grandfather designed the restaurant to look like a bar from his hometown in Bavaria Germany.

Here they serve classic German food, many of which are made from Karl's family recipes. They have German potato pancakes, a variety of schnitzels, and rouladen, thinly sliced eye of round and rolled around a beef, pork and onion mixture with a dill pickle in the middle.

If you would like to try out the Dakota Inn Rathskeller they are located at 17324 John R St, Detroit, MI 48203. For more information click here.
