He’s a Saginaw native who is no stranger to Detroit and this year he’s cleaning up at award shows. Paul Walter Hauser has already won a Golden Globe Award and a Critics Choice Award for playing Larry Hall in “Black Bird” on Apple TV+. Now the actor is up for a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for the same role. Ahead of the ceremony later this month, Hauser talked to “Live In The D” host Tati Amare about the awards, the nominations, and living in Detroit.
When it comes to the recognition he’s receiving for “Black Bird”, Hauser says it’s amazing, but the SAG Award nomination is extra special. “It really means the most to me. It’s really wild to be nominated alongside these actors. And to know my peers are voting, and that they gave me the nomination, it doesn’t get better than that.”
The show “Black Bird” follows a character played by Taron Egerton who must get a confession out of a serial killer named Larry Hall, played by Hauser. To do this, Egerton’s character James Keene must go undercover in a maximum security prison and befriend Hall. In return, Keene will get a shortened sentence.
Along with talking about the show, Hauser also reflected on his time living in Detroit. He shared a story about how life imitated art after he wasn’t finding work as an actor and ended up employed at Quicken Loans as a mortgage broker. A mortgage broker also happened to be one of the last roles he played on camera before taking the real life job.
Hauser also shared the one restaurant that he “misses dearly” from his time in Detroit. To hear his answer, watch the full interview above.
