“Cereal Drive” Fights Summer Hunger

Initiative aims to provide healthy breakfast options for kids

As the school year winds down in metro Detroit, many children face the uncertainty of where their next meal will come from with the closure of school cafeterias. To combat this, Gleaners Community Food Bank and Children’s Hospital of Michigan have launched their 15th annual Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive, ensuring kids have access to nutritious breakfasts over the summer.

Pam Taurence from Children’s Hospital explained the initiative’s importance. “The whole point is to give kids a healthy breakfast during the summer. Many of them don’t have the options of somebody home to cook the meal, so cereal was the best option for us,” said Taurence during an appearance on “Live In The D.”

Hannah Stafford of Gleaners demonstrated a simple recipe for no-bake chocolate cherry oat bars. “It’s full of whole grains and protein,” she said, emphasizing the drive’s focus on low-sugar, whole-grain cereals.

The cereal drive encourages community support, with options to donate cereal directly or contribute online. The United Dairy Association of Michigan is also pitching in, matching monetary donations with up to 80,000 servings of milk.
