Steps to help you feel good as you age

Are you having the right conversations with your doctor?

Aging is something you can’t avoid, but you can make sure you’re taking the right steps to age healthy and be independent.

Doctor Patricia Ferguson with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan joined “Live In The D” host Tati Amare to talk about what to consider when it comes to feeling good as you age.

First, they discussed the importance of talking to your doctor.

“Unless you open up and share your concerns with your provider, they really have no idea what’s going on,” said Dr. Ferguson.

She encourages you not to wait to talk to your doctor. Dr. Ferguson said she thinks people should become comfortable talking with their providers about falls and fall prevention, bladder control issues, and how to stay physically active when you’re aging and have medical conditions. However, she said these are often topics that people don’t discuss with their doctor because of shame.

Dr. Ferguson also talked about avoiding the stigma of mental health. She stressed the importance of addressing issues early.
