While visiting the Great Apes of Harambee habitat at the Detroit Zoo, you can see the lives of apes playing out right before your eyes.
Thanks to a new enclosure, now guests can get even closer to the fascinating animals.
The zoo improved the experience for guests by putting up full-sized glass to provide a better view of the apes. The glass was installed in several of the viewing areas of the multi-acre habitat.
While the visitors enjoy the improved views, the apes are making the most of their new climbing structures that help with their enrichment.
“We had a long planning process thinking about all of the different elements to add to it - the ropes, the hammocks you see, and some of the hammocks kind of double as a shade cover for the hot days,” said the Detroit Zoo’s associate curator of animals, Melissa Thueme.
