What’s the Buzz: Are Gen Z workers’ demands too unconventional?

Employees under the age of 28 are reshaping workplace culture with bold demands

The workplace has changed significantly over the last couple of decades, and now it’s Gen Z making headlines for unconventional job expectations.

Lauren Crocker from The Blaine and Lauren Show on 96.3 WDVD, Gabi Crowley, host of the podcast Are You Mad at Me? and Jason Hall with Ride-Detroit joined “Live In The D’s” What’s the Buzz segment to chat about the topic.

“Live in the D” host April Morton kicked off the conversation with a recent survey:

“Workers under the age of 28 consider perks like having nap spaces and fun spaces essential during their job searches,” Morton said.

“I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t a little jealous… When I was starting out in my career, you were making the least amount of money possible and grinding away,” Crocker said.

Companies such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ben & Jerry’s, and Nike have incorporated sleep spaces and other amenities to improve reaction time and enhance logical reasoning.

Crowley highlighted a key issue—these perks may be substituting for the benefits that truly matter.

“Some companies are providing these benefits, but they’re not really offering the ones that count, like health insurance, flexible time off, and even pet insurance. These are more important than a nap room or a game room,” Crowley said.

Hall also jokingly pointed out the importance of staying focused at work.

“I’m a little old school on this—we’re here to work, not to play ping pong,” he said.
