Free program in Detroit helps future Carpenters succeed

Students can earn money while learning

As part of Local 4’s “Trade Up” series, the station highlights people, organizations, and businesses doing trade work in Southeast Michigan.

On Live in the D, an organization in Detroit was featured that offers a free program in carpentry where students can get paid while learning. The Union Carpenters and Millwrights Skilled Training Center has a new location on Detroit’s Westside.

“The program is 4 years long...we learn from Journeymen who’s been working in this field,” said Devonte King, who works as a Carpenter/Journeyman.

King graduated in the Fall of 2024 from the program, and less than a year later, is a project manager who has worked on several popular building sites, including the brand new Coleman A Young Rec Center.
