Concert of Colors returns to Detroit with bigger lineup and free global music celebration

Detroit’s most diverse and dynamic music festival is back—and it’s bigger than ever

The Concert of Colors returns July 16 through 20, bringing global music, dance and culture to the heart of the city all for free.

Detroit icons: Grammy-winning producer Don Was and festival founder Ismael Ahmed joined “Live in the D” for an inside scoop on what to expect.

“It’s going to be a great show; we have David Staples there and other great bands,” Ahmed said.

Ahmed launched the festival in 1993 at what was then known as Chene Park. This year, the event returns to the same location, now renamed the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre.

Don Was, who has played with and produced some of the biggest names in music, shared what makes the festival special to him. “Concert of Colors is the most incredible music festival I think in the world,” he commented.

Last year, the popular event drew lines around the building. Ahmed advised fans to plan ahead but noted, “Everyone who wants to get in can, coming early is the trick,” he said.
